Singapore, 19 July (Argus) — Passenger volume at Chinese airline China Eastern remains on track to hit a record high for the second consecutive year, after registering a 45pc growth in this year's first half.

China's third largest airline by capacity carried 30.11mn passengers from January to June this year, compared with 20.78mn for the same period last year. The largest increase was posted in June when passenger volume grew by 62.54pc against the same month last year or 2.09mn to 5.44mn. The Shanghai-based carrier attributed the surge partly to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, which runs from May until October this year. Local authorities expect 70mn visitors at the event, with 3.5mn being foreigners.

China Eastern carried 44.04mn passengers last year. The airline has registered steady growth since 2000, except for 2008 when China's aviation sector was hit by a combination of bad weather, natural disasters and the global economic downturn.

A similar growth trajectory is expected at other Chinese airlines. China Southern flew 36.2mn passengers in the first half of this year, an increase of 17pc against the previous year.

China's aviation industry boom is likely to drive the country's jet fuel consumption. China's apparent jet-kerosine demand, calculated as imports and output combined, was just shy of 342,000 b/d during January-May this year, another historical high.
