Singapore, 16 August (Argus) — Air traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) surged to record highs in July, driven by the peak summer travel season and helping support Asian jet fuel demand.

Passenger throughput at the airport hit an all-time high of 4.7mn in July, 13pc higher than June and 17.5pc higher than the same month last year. Aircraft movements were also at a record high, up 14.7pc from a year ago to 26,720. Cargo tonnage rose by 24.5pc over the same period to 363,0000t, just shy of the record 367,000t set in May.

Cumulative passenger volume at HKIA reached 29.2mn for the first seven months of the year, remaining on track to hit an annual high by the end of the year.

Passenger traffic was buoyed by strong demand on routes to and from mainland China and southeast Asia, the airport said. Its cargo business was boosted by double-digit growth in almost all of Hong Kong's major trading markets. Exports to North America and Europe continue to recover from last year's economic downturn, surging by 36pc over the same month last year.

The summer holiday season is traditionally the peak demand period for air travel in Hong Kong with passenger traffic last hitting a record high of 4.45mn in July 2008. HKIA is optimistic that the continuing restoration of capacity by the region's airlines will continue to strengthen Hong Kong's position as a regional aviation hub. “July saw a high average load factor of close to 80pc for passenger flights at HKIA. To meet increased demand, both foreign and base carriers have been active in adding more flights, launching new destinations, or restoring flights that had been suspended during the financial crisis,” said Airport Authority Hong Kong chief executive Stanley Hui Hon-chung.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific announced last week that it was looking to restore its capacity to pre-2008 financial crisis levels.
