Versalis, the petrochemicals arm of Italy’s Eni, will spend €125mn ($172mn) on upgrade work at its Mantova site in Italy.
The investment will be spread over the next four years through 2017. It is aimed at optimising the site’s industrial processes and carrying out further energy saving measures, as well as bolstering research and development work on new products and technologies.
The plan will mainly target the strong business opportunities in intermediates and styrenes, Eni said.
Versalis produces 300,000 t/yr of phenol, 185,000 t/yr acetone and 85,000 t/yr of polystyrene at Mantova, which is linked to the group’s other industrial sites in Porto Marghera, Ferrara and Ravenna via a pipeline.
Eni is investing €54bn under a group-wide 2014-2017 strategic programme aimed at growing its oil exploration and production business and restructuring the middle to downstream segments, including refining and petrochemicals.
