Woodside farms into offshore Morocco

Australian independent Woodside Petroleum has marked its return to Africa with a farm-in agreement with London-listed, Africa-focused Chariot Oil and Gas for upstream permits offshore Morocco.

Woodside will acquire an initial 25pc interest in the Rabat Deep offshore permits 1-6 in the Doukkala basin offshore northwest Morocco. The agreement also includes an option to acquire an additional 25pc and become operator of the permits.

The permits cover 10,782km² in water depths ranging from 150m to 3,600m. The Rabat Deep permits complement its assets in the nearby Canary islands, which is Spanish territory but is off the Moroccan coastline, the company said.

Woodside was looking at potential offshore exploration opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa and the Atlantic coastline from Nigeria up to Morocco, its executive vice-president for global exploration, Phil Loader, said in May.

Morocco has attracted BP and Chevron in recent years to its offshore basins. BP farmed into a deepwater salt basin offshore Morocco held by US independent Kosmos Energy last October. Chevron signed deals with Morocco's national office for hydrocarbons and mines in January 2013, accessing three offshore areas totalling 29,000km² and at water depths of up to 4,500m. Morocco produced 5,100 b/d of petroleum and other liquids in 2012, up only slightly over the past decade from 3,700 b/d in 2003, according to the US EIA.

Woodside spent much of the late 1990s and early 2000s expanding its foreign presence, mainly in Africa, where it had interests in Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Sierra Leone and Kenya. But its foray into Africa ended after it sold its interests on the continent during 2004-11 under previous chief executive Don Voelte.
