Singapore, 5 August (Argus) — Indonesian mining firm Adaro remains on track to hit its production target of between 54mn-56mn t of coal this year, having boosted both output and sales in the April-June quarter.

Adaro produced 13.84mnt of coal during April-June compared with 13.52mn t a year earlier. Sales for the period increased to 14.47mn t from 13.77mn t in April-June 2013 and 13.93mn t in January-March this year. The firm attributed the increase in production and sales to strong contractor performance, while output also increased at the end of Kalimantan's annual monsoon season at the end of May.

Adaro during the April-June quarter started production from mines operated by the recently acquired Semesta Centramas, one of three mining companies it acquired a 75pc stake in during 2013. The coal is branded as Balangan and has similar low-pollutant characteristics to Adaro's Envirocoal brand. The firm produced 77,335t and shipped 53,274t of Balangan coal to a customer in Thailand during the quarter, with production expected to ramp up to 1mn t this year.

Adaro increased barging by 4pc in the latest quarter to 13.41mn t, with 20pc of coal sales barged directly to domestic customers.

Its focus for the remainder of this year remains on improving efficiency and productivity of its operations, Adaro said. It aims to maintain reliable coal supply to its customers, staying on target to achieve its annual production target despite challenging market conditions.

“During the second-quarter international coal prices remained subdued as the oversupply situation continued,” Adaro said. “We expect further price pressure to occur in the short term, especially for the low-rank coals, due to competition from Australian off-spec and Chinese domestic coals. However we expect Indian demand will pick up in the second half of 2014 due to an improved political climate from the new government, which allows tenders to be issued and electricity tariff increases to be approved in some states.”

Adaro, which is Indonesia's second-largest coal producer, accounted for around 12.6pc of the country's total 2013 thermal coal production of around 410mn t. Its coal ranges in calorific value from 4,000 kcal/kg to 5,000 kcal/kg GAR, with the majority of its production exported to China, India, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
