Caltex expands Australia lubes distribution

Caltex Australia is expanding its lubricant storage and distribution network, including construction of a bulk storage facility in Western Australia.

The facility at Welshpool, a suburb of Perth, will be supplied with lubricants from Caltex's Lytton blending plant in Brisbane, as well as imports from Thailand and Singapore.

Caltex is Australia's second-largest lube supplier with a market share of about 22pc. It holds a 50pc stake in Australasian Lubricants Manufacturing, which operates three lube plants in Australia, in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

Caltex, which has already upgraded its Brisbane lube and grease blending plant, is also upgrading its bulk storage facility at Newport in Melbourne, to be able to supply lubricants in bulk.

Competition in Australia's lubricating oil market is rising as the country's economic growth slows and automobile sales fall, adding to the slowdown in lube consumption. Lube demand of 166.9mn litres (144,500t) in the first half of this year was 1.4pc lower than the same period last year, and more than 20pc lower than sales in the first half of 2011.

Australia's base oil and lube imports also nudged down in the first half of the year, slipping 1.6pc to 246.1mn l.
