PCS looks to boost 2015 potash output

PotashCorp (PCS) expects to increase its potash operational capability to 10.5mn-11mn tonnes KCl in 2015, up from 9.2mn t in 2014, as rising overseas demand offsets falling US crop prices.

US potash consumption will likely be down some in 2015, but not "in-a-ditch consumption that some people are worried about," PCS chief financial officer Wayne Brownlee said at an investor conference this week. Corn prices are hovering around $3.40/bushel, down from near $5/bushel at this time last year, as the US begins to harvest a record crop.

Demand is expected to increase in China and India, and anticipated supply constraints from competitors will allow PCS to pick up more sales, Brownlee said.

"Our plan for 2015 is making sure we've got enough (production) to respond to better demand than expected," he said.

Part of that effort was recalling previously laid-off workers at its Lanigan, Saskatchewan, mine in June to keep up with granular MOP demand. PCS also recalled workers that month at its New Brunswick facility.

In 2015, PCS' Rocanville, Saskatchewan, potash mine will have fully ramped up following an expansion project that increased operational capability to 5.7mn t/yr. The company plans to run the mine full-out because of its low $70/t production cost.

PCS also expects logistics to play a major role in the North American market for the next two or three years, before railroads can carry out planned capacity expansions. The rail delays seen last winter/spring has caused some buyers to move away from a just-in-time buying mentality, Brownlee said.

"US logistical constraints have helped make the customer a little less worried about price and more worried with product availability," Brownlee said.

PCS is most encouraged by the Chinese market, where demand is estimated at 12mn t for 2014. It expects sustained growth there, supported by a "moderate pricing strategy" to help stimulate consumption.

The company also noted that it has seen an increase in granular MOP demand in China, which is traditionally a standard MOP market. The added granular demand is one factor that has limited global granular supply.

Canpotex, through which PCS exports potash along with Mosaic and Agrium, and other suppliers will be aiming for higher prices for 2015 supply contracts to China, up from the $305/t cfr level set in 2014 that was widely seen as the price floor for the market.
