Chevron Phillips Chemical is considering expanding its low viscosity polyalphaolefins (PAO) capacity by 10,000 t/yr at its 48,000 t/yr Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas.

The company has filed for a permit the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and expects to seek final project approval in the second quarter of 2015. Project completion is aimed for 2016.

"The proposed expansion will help us to meet our increasing customer demand for sustainable products," said Miles Oberton, global business manager of polyalphaolefins for Chevron Phillips. "PAOs provide energy efficient solutions to meet higher performance requirements, particularly in automotive and industrial applications."

Chevron Phillips recently started construction of its 100,000 t/yr expansion of normal alpha olefins capacity at Cedar Bayou, scheduled for completion in July 2015. Normal alpha olefins are used as a feedstock for PAO production.
