Profit at Malaysia's state-owned energy firm Petronas fell by 12.3pc to 15.07bn ringgit ($4.39bn) in the third quarter from a year earlier, as a rise in crude production was offset by lower prices and foreign exchange losses.

Profit in January-September fell by 3.7pc from the year-earlier period to 52.8bn ringgit, despite a 7.4pc rise in revenue to 249.8bn ringgit because of higher upstream output and rising domestic gas sales through the firm's Malacca LNG regasification terminal.

Petronas' crude, condensate and gas production edged up by 0.7pc to 2.08mn b/d of oil equivalent (boe/d) in July-September, driven by a 6.5pc increase in liquids output to 822,000 b/d as new production came on stream in Iraq, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Output in January-September rose by 4pc to 2.18mn boe/d, with crude and condensate production up by 11.6pc to 839,000 b/d.

The firm sold 557,000 b/d of crude in July-September, up by 9pc from a year earlier because of a rise in its trading and marketing activities. But its oil product sales fell by 2.1pc to 815,000 b/d, largely because of lower bunker and bitumen sales in South Africa. Petrochemical sales were steady over the period at 1.4mn t.
