Williams' newly expanded Geismar, Louisiana ethylene cracker is in the final stages of commissioning, and the company expects ethylene production for sale to begin this month.
"Some of these commissioning activities have taken longer than originally planned, but as we have stated throughout this process, safety is our number one priority," said John Dearborn, Williams' senior vice president of NGL & Petchem Services, in a statement today.
Startup of the expanded 1.95bn lb/yr facility has been delayed several times since the plant went down following an explosion in June 2013. The company previously estimated sales would begin in November.
The outage at Geismar, in addition to repairs on the 2.6bn lb/yr Evangeline ethylene pipeline, which links storage hubs in Texas and Louisiana, has constrained ethylene supplies in the region. Spot ethylene prices at Choctaw, Louisiana have maintained a premium to Mont Belvieu, Texas, last trading at 62¢/lb on 21 November, 10¢/lb higher than at the Texas hub.
