Occidental says Ingleside cracker on schedule

Construction of a new 1.2bn lb/yr ethylene cracker at Ingleside, Texas, is underway and on schedule for operations in the first quarter of 2017, joint venture partners Occidental Chemical and Mexichem announced today.

Construction of the facility commenced in the second quarter of this year, according to the companies. The $1.5bn project received regulatory permits in May.

Today's update follows steep declines in spot ethylene prices on the US Gulf coast, which hit a four-year low of 38.25¢/lb earlier this week amid oversupply. The project, dubbed Ingleside Ethylene, is among a handful of new capacity slated to be built in the next several years. Some market participants have speculated new-build projects planned on the US Gulf coast could be threatened by a sharp decline in monomer prices.
