Chile's molybdenum concentrate production was 5,278t in February, 57.2pc higher than the 3,357t produced in the same month a year earlier, data from the national statistics institute (INE) said.

Output was up 6.7pc against January's 4,9481t.

Production was boosted by output from newer mines such as KGHM's Sierra Gorda project and the Caserones pit controlled by Japan's Pan Pacific Copper.

In the first two months of 2016, Chile's molybdenum concentrate output was 10,226t, 42.7pc higher than the 7,165t in the same period last year. Production for the whole of 2015 was 52,474t, up 7.7pc on the 48,732t in the previous 12 months.

Roasted molybdenum concentrate prices rose to more than $15/lb in June 2014, the highest level in nearly three years, helped by rising demand in Europe, allied to the absence of several producers from the market. But lower demand, particularly from the oil sector and oversupply gradually saw prices fall to a 12-year low of $4.30-4.40/lb in mid October 2015. Concentrate was assessed by Argus at $5.50-5.60/lb on 31 March from $5.40-5.55/lb two days earlier.
