TransCanada to expand NOVA system in Western Canada

TransCanada says it will expand its NOVA Gas Transmission (NGTL) system in Alberta and British Columbia to support natural gas production growth.

The Saddle West Project, which is supported by incremental firm contracts, will increase the northwest portion of the NGTL system by about 355mn cf/d (10mn m³/d), with an expected in-service date in 2019.

"NGTL's unparalleled footprint enables us to efficiently meet the increased transportation needs of our customers in the Montney, Duvernay and Deep Basin areas and to reliably connect new production to high-value intra and ex-basin markets," TransCanada's president of natural gas pipelines Karl Johannson said yesterday.

The 2019-expansion will include 18 miles (29 km) of 36-inch diameter pipeline looping existing mainlines, the addition of five compressor units at existing station sites and new metering facilities. Total cost of the project is expected at C$655mn ($495mn).

TransCanada will file an application to construct and operate the project with the National Energy Board of Canada (NEB) in the third quarter of 2017. Construction is expected to start in 2018, contingent to regulatory approvals.

The 15,251-mile NGTL system is the primary gathering system for Alberta and northeastern British Columbia, moving growing production from the Duvernay, Montney and Horn river fields. It connects with the Canadian Mainline, Foothills system and other third-party pipelines, and delivers gas to major markets in Alberta and British Columbia and in the US.

The Saddle West project is incremental to projects previously announced on NGTL, and is on top of TransCanada's previously announced C$5.4bn near-term capital program, TransCanada said. In November 2015 TransCanada announced 2.7Bcf/d of new firm natural gas contracts on NGTL.

TransCanada is also working on the 2017 NGTL System Expansion Projects to increase capacity by 443mn cf/d. The NEB on June 2016 recommended the federal government approve that project. A final approval for 2017 expansion is expected before the end of the year.
