SK accelerates EV battery expansion on new orders

South Korea's SK Innovation is ramping up the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) battery business because new orders, including a strategic partnership with German automaker Volkswagen, will require more new plants than were previously planned.

SK now aims to increase its EV battery production to 55GWh by 2022 from its current level of 4.7GWh. The new target far exceeds SK's previous 2022 capacity projection of 20GWh and will require investment of as much as 4 trillion won ($3.54bn). The company did not say how the near-term expansion will affect its previous 2025 production target of 50 GWh.

SK and Volkswagen earlier this month signed a contract under which the South Korean firm will play a large role in supplying batteries for the automaker's EVs in Europe and North America.

Volumes and pricing are flexible under all of Volkswagen's new battery contracts, but SK's new expansion target hints at the near-term scale of the strategic partnership. The company already has new plants under development in China and Hungary, as well as an expansion of its current factory in South Korea's Chungnam province, which will push its production capacity to 20GWh by 2022. The Volkswagen deal accounts for most, at least, of the 35GWh of additional capacity that SK now plans to build.

Volkswagen plans to introduce 50 new EV models under its various nameplates by 2025, and forecasts it will need more than 150GWh/yr of battery capacity to equip its fleet in the same timeframe. To put that in perspective, 150GWh of batteries is enough to equip about 5mn EVs. The number of EVs in use globally rose by 54pc to 3.1mn in 2017, according to the IEA, which predicts that the total will climb to about 125mn by 2030.
