Syrah advances purified spherical graphite production

Sydney-based graphite producer Syrah Resources expects to produce the first purified spherical graphite at its battery anode material plant in the US state of Louisiana before the end of June.

Raw material will come from its Balama graphite operation in Mozambique, the world's largest exporter of natural graphite.

A major review of the specifications for a commercial anode material plant, including its product range, has largely been completed, the company said. Key outcomes from the study will be released in the April-June quarter. Unpurified spherical graphite from a pilot plant has been dispatched to non-Chinese customers for testing and approval.

Syrah's natural spherical graphite competition comes exclusively from China, giving it an opportunity to develop markets in North America and other parts of the world.

Development timelines for the Louisiana anode material plant are expected to be driven by funding and partnership options.

Syrah's Balama operation produced 48,000t of natural graphite in the January-March quarter and is expected to increase to 50,000-55,000t in April-June. Output for 2019 is expected to be around 250,000t compared with 104,000t in 2018.

Graphite is an essential ingredient in anodes for lithium-ion batteries and is also used in several other industrial applications.
