Indonesia's only styrene monomer (SM) producer, Styrindo Mono Indonesia (SMI), will further cut its operating rates, joining other producers in the region in seeking to reduce losses.
SMI already reduced operating rates at its smaller 100,000 t/yr No. 1 unit in Banten province, Indonesia, to 80pc this month. SM from this unit is usually exported.
The producer now plans to also load down its larger 250,000 t/yr No. 2 production line to 90pc from next month. SM from this unit, which was previously operating fully, is typically for the domestic market.
Integrated producers started to face production losses from October last year, while non-integrated producers have been enduring production losses since November.
