South Korean steel producer Posco said sales of electric vehicle (EV) battery materials at its Posco Chemical unit will more than double this year, while revenue from the segment will nearly triple as demand increases and new capacity comes on stream.

Sales of cathode and anode materials will rise to a combined 60,000t in 2020 from last year's 23,500t. Cathode material production capacity will rise to 44,000 t/yr by the end of the year, equivalent to more than 12 times 2019's output. Anode capacity will increase to 55,000 t/yr compared with last year's production of 20,000t.

Posco Chemical's revenue from battery materials climbed by 43pc last year to 246.4bn won ($205.9mn), with the business increasing to a forecast W700bn in 2020, the parent company said. Sales are projected to continue rising, reaching 50pc of the unit's total revenues in 2021, up from 17pc last year.

Posco aims to capture a 20pc share of the global battery materials market. Posco Chemical plans to expand its capacity to produce cathode materials to 59,000 t/yr by 2022, while anode materials capacity will rise to 74,000 t/yr.

Rising demand for another key metal used in EV batteries, nickel, is driving up costs at Posco's stainless steel unit. The company said it will respond by looking for ways to cut production expenses and will focus on developing premium products with high-purity nickel that will not have to compete with nickel pig iron.
