TC Energy prepares for greater gas flow disruptions

Maintenance and other restrictions on TC Energy's pipeline systems will become larger starting this summer as capacity flexibility decreases, the company said today.

Maintenance has been scheduled often over the last few months but TC Energy said flexibility has not been an issue, even with economic disruption from efforts to limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The company's Gas Transmission Northwest (GTN) pipeline in the western US for example has not been fully contracted, it said, minimizing impacts.

As contracts increase this summer "coordination will need to be enhanced" between pipeline companies, TC Energy said.

The company did not cite workforce issues, although Covid-19 containment measures have caused stay-at-home orders and other distancing efforts which could complicate maintenance, inspections and repairs during the summer demand season.

TC Energy's GTN pipeline connects to the Malin hub at the California-Oregon border, transporting natural gas south from the border of British Columbia, Canada.

Some contracts on GTN set to start in June have been deferred, but TC Energy said it did not know the reason. The deferment could potentially help shippers as it increases flexible capacity, especially as summer demand for cooling picks up.

TC Energy said flows on its NOVA Gas Transmission (NGTL) system have also been largely unaffected by maintenance amid Covid-19 thus far, compared with three-year average historical flows.

NGTL connects with the company's Canadian Mainline and Foothills system, as well as other third-party pipelines.

TC Energy was formerly known as TransCanada.
