Samsung SDI sees quick recovery in EV battery demand

South Korean battery producer Samsung SDI said demand for electric vehicle (EV) power packs is "quickly normalising", as auto producers restart production lines shut during during the height of Covid-19 pandemic and generous government incentives spur more vehicle sales.

With EV subsidies increasing in Europe — Germany doubled its purchase incentive from last month to 6,000 euros ($7,037) — prices for EV models can be 10-20pc lower than comparable conventional vehicles, Samsung SDI chief financial officer Kwon Young-no said. With new EV models rolling out, sales are expected to surge, which will help Samsung SDI post 50pc higher sales in the segment in this year's second half than in January-June, he said.

The company is developing more advanced batteries and expanding capacity to position itself to capitalise on EV market growth. "The EV market growth is taking off, and the competition is getting fiercer, but we will be equipped with the right competitive edge to meet the market's expectations," Kwon said.

Samsung SDI also sees government policy boosting demand for energy storage systems. Many countries are including major renewable energy investments in their economic stimulus programmes, the company said. With Covid-19 discouraging people from using public transportation, Samsung SDI said demand for cylindrical batteries is rising to power electric bikes and scooters. Cylindrical battery sales are seen rising by 30pc from January-June in this year's second half.

With EV sales slowed by the pandemic, the company's April-June profit dropped by 70pc from a year earlier to 47.7bn won ($39.9mn).
