Novatek, SCF order 10 more Arc7 LNG carriers

Russian gas producer Novatek and state-owned shipowner Sovcomflot (SCF) have ordered a further 10 Arc7 ice-class LNG carriers for the Novatek-led 19.8mn t/yr Arctic LNG 2 project.

The orders, made by Novatek and SCF joint venture Smart LNG, bring the total number of Arc7 carriers ordered for Arctic LNG 2 to 15 carriers, all of which will be built by the Rosneft-led Zvezda shipyard in Russia's far east.

Smart LNG has chartered all 15 of the vessels to the liquefaction project, located on the Gydan peninsula, opposite Novatek's 16.5mn t/yr Yamal LNG project on the Yamal peninsula in Russia's far north.

The joint venture has already ordered a pilot Arc7, and a further four carriers from Zvezda, with delivery slated for March-December 2023. Arctic LNG 2's first of three planned trains is scheduled to start up production in the same year.

Russian state-owned bank VEB has provided the financing for the 10 new orders, having already financed the initial five.

Novatek has previously estimated that 15-17 new Arc7 carriers — which can transit the Northern Sea Route (NSR) — would be needed to meet Arctic LNG 2's loading demand, although up to 10 of these had been expected to be ordered from South Korean or Chinese shipyards. Yamal LNG's 15-strong fleet of Arc7 carriers were all ordered from South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The 15 carriers ordered for Arctic LNG 2 from Zvezda "ensures the core formation of the Arctic fleet for the project", Novatek said today.

The vessels will be the first Arc7 carriers built by a Russian shipyard, with Zvezda securing design specifications from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries for its design specifications, with the builder remaining a technological partner in the construction.

Novatek is eyeing year-round transit of the NSR, which is currently restricted to summer months when ice levels are lowest. State-owned Rosatomflot — the state-appointed route operator — is building five 60MW icebreakers to support NSR transit, the first of which is slated for delivery in October. And the firm has also ordered the first of three planned 120MW icebreakers from Zvezda.

Design modifications to the Arc7 carriers ordered for Arctic LNG 2 will allow the vessels a greater ability to work with the five new 60MW icebreakers, as well as greater ice penetration, SCF chief executive Sergey Frank said in September last year.
