Australia’s Jemena planning hydrogen fuel for NSW

Australian gas and power infrastructure group Jemena plans to produce green hydrogen for the transport and industrial sectors in the country's most populous state of New South Wales (NSW) from early 2022. The hydrogen will be supplied from Jemena's western Sydney pilot plant following an agreement with Australian gas supply firm Coregas.

Coregas will take green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy with no carbon emissions from the Jemena plant, and in turn sell the fuel to its customers. Coregas, which is part of Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers, has already bought hydrogen-fuelled trucks. The green hydrogen will be produced at Jemena's A$15mn ($11mn) western Sydney green gas project, which has been co-funded by the Australian government's Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

The Jemena plant has a 500kW electrolyser, with a nameplate hydrogen production capacity of 87,500 kg/yr after the firm expanded capacity from the initial design of 52,600 kg/yr. The project's planning documents states that around 6GWh of electricity will be required and supplied from the existing main grid through a new power connection, with a two-way meter to allow for grid export and import metering. Jemena said that it intended to develop a 1MW solar photovoltaic generation plant on the site to provide alternative power for the project.

Jemena is 60pc owned by Chinese utility State Grid Corporation of China and 40pc owned by state-controlled utility Singapore Power. It has been working on a project to supply a 2pc blend of hydrogen in its gas network in western Sydney to supply around 250 homes and an electric vehicle recharging station.
