Shell signs first gas supply contract in Brazil

Shell signed its first natural gas supply contract in Brazil today with Pernambuco-state distributor Copergas, making it the first private-sector producer to agree to sell natural gas to a distributor in Brazil.

The deal calls for the delivery of 750,000 m³/d of natural gas in 2022 and of 1mn m³/d in 2023 to the distributor, Shell said.

The transaction makes Shell the first company, besides state-owned Petrobras, to sell natural gas in Brazil, as the country is beginning to open its natural gas market to foreign competition.

Petrobras will continue to supply Copergas with natural gas in 2022 and 2023, but today's deal grants Copergas a 17pc discount in the gas purchased from Shell in comparison to gas supplied by Petrobras. These cost-reductions will be passed through to the distributor`s clients.

The deal will also allow some flexibility regarding indexation, by granting Copergas the possibility of choosing between the Brent and Henry Hub price index every three months for its deliveries. The purchase is a result of Copergas' open-season that started in September 2020. Eight companies participated.

Shell's move into the natural gas market from 2022 on is related to Petrobras' commitment to competition watchdog CADE to discontinue direct gas purchases from other E&P companies. This means that around 14mn m³/d that is currently purchased by Petrobras from other upstream gas producers will have to gradually be sold directly by traders or the oil companies to gas consumers.
