Carpenter Technology expects aerospace shipments and backlogs to grow in 2022 as build rates rise.

Demand from some aerospace consumers has already returned, the Philadelphia-based alloy producer said in its fiscal first quarter earnings release yesterday. Consumers in the fastener and distribution sub-markets have already begun to replenish inventories, a trend it expects to continue for the aerospace market in 2022, the company said.

It also expects demand from the medical market to rise in the coming quarter as procedure rates increase, closing in on pre-pandemic levels. In addition, Carpenter predicted mid- and long-term improvements in the light-duty transportation market as consumers continued to spend with low inventories despite supply chain challenges.

Shipments for the quarter ending 30 September edged down by 2pc to 43.5mn lbs. The decline was led by greater inter-segment volumes and a drop in specialty alloys, which fell to 43mn lbs from 43.4mn lbs.

Performance engineered product shipments climbed by 62pc to 2.4mn lb, supported by titanium fasteners for the aerospace end-market.

Sales to the aerospace market declined to $135mn from $147.5mn a year earlier. Medical market sales rose to $37mn from $30mn, while industrial and consumer markets climbed by 5pc to $66mn. The company also lifted sales to the transportation and distribution sectors with only energy market sales also dropping.

Carpenter lost $15mn on $388mn in revenues during the latest quarter, improving on a $47mn loss on $353mn in revenues a year earlier.
