Australian steelmaker BlueScope has agreed to buy the ferrous division of US scrap supplier MetalX, a primary scrap supplier to its North Star electric arc furnace (EAF) flat-rolled steel mill in Ohio.

The transaction adds two of MetalX's shredding sites: one in Indiana and another adjacent to the North Star mill in Delta, Ohio. BlueScope is paying $240mn for the two sites. The deal is expected to close in December.

The MetalX ferrous assets will operate under the new name BlueScope Recycling and Materials.

MetalX's ferrous scrap business supplies around 20pc of the scrap used by North Star, BlueScrop said. The purchase will allow the steelmaker to improve the quality and quantity of obsolete scrap that it uses, and lessen the amount of prime scrap it consumes, according to the steelmaker.

The North Star mill is adding a third EAF, which will expand its flat-rolled production capacity to 3.25mn t/yr (3.58mn st/yr).

MetalX is owned by the Rifkin family, who previously sold scrap supplier OmniSource to EAF steelmaker Steel Dynamics (SDI) in 2007 for $1bn.

The buy is the latest piece of consolidation in the industry after integrated steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs agreed to buy scrap metal recycler Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) for $775mn and SA Recycling agreed to purchase PSC Metals for $290mn.
