Japanese upstream firm Inpex and utility Kansai Electric Power are considering a possible co-operation to explore decarbonisation projects, as part of their targets to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Inpex and Kansai signed an initial agreement on 19 April to jointly study collaboration opportunities to develop businesses related to zero-carbon fuels and carbon capture and storage technologies. Further details are unavailable.

Inpex is gearing up efforts to ensure stable supplies of hydrogen, ammonia and renewable power towards 2050, targeting to make its oil and gas businesses cleaner and more resilient in the global transition to a low-carbon future.

Kansai is aiming to halve CO2 emissions from power generation by the April 2025-March 2026 fiscal year compared with 2013-14 levels by increasing its renewable and nuclear output, with an eye towards its overall business achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
