NaturAll eyes Brazilian CO2 biosequestration credits

UK-based NaturAll Carbon expects to issue carbon credits from biosequestration in Brazil's agricultural soil by 2023. Chief executive Alexandre Leite tells Argus about the project and his expectations of the nature-based carbon credit market.

How does soil sequestration compare with other carbon credit projects?

Brazil is one of the countries with the most advanced conservation agriculture. It is time for the market to recognise and reward farmers for what they have done for climate preservation. Unfortunately, the market does not buy carbon credits for the work done in the past, but improvements and best practices in preserving the soil by biosequestration will generate carbon credits going forward.

How many carbon credits are being generated from soil sequestration?

No-one has issued a carbon credit from biosequestration and its storage in Brazilian agricultural soil. It has been generated in small quantities in the US and Australia. We expect our first credits by the first quarter of 2023 at the latest. We estimate 2mn t of CO2e credits by the end of 2023 and 12mn t/yr by 2027.

Are any particular buyers more interested in credits from soil enrichment than other sources?

The market pays a premium for nature-based carbon credits compared with credits from emission reductions. The market recognises that sequestration is somehow more relevant than reduction. Nature-based is very aligned with all the issues addressed by governments, companies and society, not only related with global warming, climate restoration and sustainable development goals, but also with the fact that nature-based carbon sequestration helps solve other issues such as food security, water supply and soil regeneration.

Soil enrichment is a long-term project that requires big farms to justify initial investments. Is Brazil the ideal place to scale up soil sequestration?

Absolutely. The growth of Brazilian commercial agricultural production happened together with the expansion of conservation agriculture systems that improved productivity and efficiency in the use of fertilisers and agricultural inputs. Brazil has one of the world's best agriculture conservation programmes. We expect carbon farming to serve as an example for other countries. Once we consolidate our business in Brazil, one of our objectives is to transfer our knowledge and technology to develop carbon farming in African and Latin American countries.

How are the credits that NaturAll Carbon generates verified?

NaturAll Carbon will have all credits certified by a recognised independent international certifier. The challenge is to ensure their eligibility, as not all agricultural crops can be part of this programme. The qualifying crops we are working with are soybean, corn, wheat, cotton and natural or managed grazing. These farms need to use best practices for agriculture conservation with limited tilling, crop rotation and no soil damage, among others. The challenge for buyers is to ensure they are acquiring a quality nature-based carbon credit to offset their carbon footprint.

What is the price range for nature-based carbon credits?

Today the nature-based market price is about $15/t CO2e. This is three times higher than a year ago. Market analysts estimate prices will be $25-35/t CO2e by 2030. They expect the voluntary carbon credit market to grow 15 times by 2030 and 100 times by 2050, when most of the companies have their offset targets.
