Japan's largest gas retailer Tokyo Gas and Narita International Airport will establish 50:50 joint venture Green Energy Frontier to supply electricity to the airport in Chiba prefecture.

Green Energy Frontier will start operations from April after it takes over Narita Airport's energy supply facilities, Tokyo Gas said. It aims to reduce carbon emissions at Narita Airport, the joint venture's operator, in efforts to achieve Japan's net zero goal by 2050.

The joint venture plans to spend ¥100bn ($746mn) by 2050 to build power plants, including a 180MW solar power station. It aims to start commercial operations at the solar power station by March 2031 with a combined capacity of 75MW, with capacity rising to 180MW by March 2046.

Tokyo Gas also recently reached a deal with Sodegaura city in Chiba to co-operate on decarbonising the city.

Tokyo Gas plans to invest ¥2 trillion in growth areas, including decarbonisation.
