Scottish 300MW H2 plant to decarbonise whisky industry

Plans for a 300MW hydrogen plant to decarbonise industry in Scotland's Highlands region are making progress. A final investment decision (FID) on a first phase for 30MW is scheduled at the end of this year, and the full 300MW phase is on track for 2030, project developer Storegga said today.

The start date for the Cromarty Firth project, north of Inverness, has slipped from 2024, but the developers have increased ambitions to a 300MW regional hub. The first 30MW phase was oversubscribed in terms of demand, and the developers have lined up deals with eight buyers — mostly distilleries that will replace fossil fuels with hydrogen for making steam, Storegga hydrogen asset manager Tim Dumenil said.

The project is to be scaled up in four phases, but the exact timelines for subsequent stages hinge on a UK government decision — due at the end of 2023 — on gas network conversion and hydrogen blending, Dumenil said. The later phases are likely to use pipeline transportation, unlike the first phase that will use tube tailer distribution. The government decision on using hydrogen for heat in buildings, which is due in 2026, is also relevant and the project needs clarity on both to make firm plans, he said.

Scotland's gas network operator SGN aims to convert its entire network to hydrogen by 2030 but important regions such as Cromarty may be completed earlier, Dumenil said.

The Cromarty hub is being developed by utility Scottish Power and 2020-founded Storegga, whose backers include Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, Japanese conglomerate Mitsui, Australian financial services firm Macquarie Group, and Italy's energy infrastructure group Snam.

Storegga is eyeing another possible 1GW electrolysis project in the region to make hydrogen and derivatives for export but plans for this are less developed, Dunmenil said
