Australia’s Tamboran signs gas pipeline, LNG deals

Australian independent gas company Tamboran Resources has announced new agreements to progress its Beetaloo gas basin development in the Northern Territory (NT), with a pipeline contractor chosen and potential offtake partners identified for its proposed LNG plant.

The firm has entered initial agreements with BP and Shell to each purchase 2.2mn t/yr of LNG over a 20-year period. Tamboran was last month allocated a 170 hectare site at a new industrial precinct near Darwin for its proposed 6.6mn t/yr Northern Territory LNG (NTLNG).

The company said it will begin work on a front-end engineering design for NTLNG, planned for completion in 2024. The company is aiming for formal execution of sale and purchase agreements with BP and Shell in 2025.

"We look forward to progressing our agreements with both parties, who have both shown significant support to Tamboran through the accelerated discussions, which further emphasise the importance of LNG demand growth in the Asia-Pacific region," chief executive Joel Riddle said on 23 June.

Tamboran also announced pipeline operator APA has been selected as its preferred partner for a proposed pipeline, which will connect its planned Beetaloo pilot plant at Shenandoah South with APA's Amadeus gas pipeline. APA will spend A$10mn ($6.7mn) on preliminary studies over the coming year while also partnering with the NT government and Tamboran for talks on a possible connection to the proposed NTLNG.

A connection to the Amadeus gas pipeline would enable Tamboran to start deliveries in 2025 under the firm's existing 10-year 36.5 PJ/yr (949mn m³/yr) gas sales agreement with Australian utility Origin Energy, the firm said.

Beetaloo's estimated shale gas resources are internationally significant but the basin's development has been hindered because of a hydraulic fracturing moratorium imposed in 2016, which the NT government has subsequently lifted.

Fellow independent Empire Energy is also planning to start production from its Beetaloo development in 2025 and has signed an initial agreement with APA to send gas from the NT to eastern Australia where supply shortfalls are forecast this decade.
