India's Sail resumes Bokaro steel operations after fire

State-controlled Steel Authority of India's (Sail) has resumed stable operations at its Bokaro steel plant in Jharkhand state, after a fire broke out on 29 June.

The fire broke out at 11pm IST (5:30pm GMT) on 29 June after hot metal spilled from caster No.2 in steel melt shop-2 and came into contact with electrical cables and a hydraulic hose near the area, the Bokaro plant's chief of communications Manikant Dhan told Argus.

Operations were impacted for some time, with gas kilns affected because of the incident. But the fire was brought under control by 1:30am on 30 June and normal operations resumed, Dhan said.

The Bokaro steel plant mainly produces flat steel products such as hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel. Its hot strip mill registered the highest-ever production at 3.91mn t in the 2021-22 fiscal year. Its cold rolling mill also recorded highest-ever production at 652,000t during that period, while total finished steel production stood at 3.83mn t during the period.

Sail registered its highest-ever crude steel output of 18.3mn t in the April 2022-March 2023 fiscal year and record sales volumes of 16.2mn t.
