Ukrainian steelmakers resume shipments by Black Sea

Three vessels carrying steel and iron ore produced in Ukraine have broken through Russia's Black Sea blockade for the first time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the country's integrated mining and steel company Metinvest has said.

The vessels carried over 76,000t of rolled steel produced by Azovstal, Zaporizhstal, Kamet Steel and ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, as well as 172,000t of iron ore concentrate produced by Metinvest. These products were manufactured and paid for before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

The ships involved in this operation, which was supported by the Ukrainian navy and other national security agencies, departed the ports of Odesa and Pivdennyi.

"The breaking of the maritime blockade by ships carrying Ukrainian steel is a historic moment and the first step towards the full unblocking of maritime exports for the entire range of Ukrainian products — fertilisers, steel, iron ore, food, pipes, equipment and other goods," the head of Metinvest's chief executive project office, Oleksandr Vodoviz, said.

The Black Sea blockade has forced Ukraine to rely on rail lines to Europe to transport its steel products, limiting its export capacity.

Ukraine's steel and scrap exports fell in 2022, as steelmakers halted production and the Black Sea blockade stemmed flows.

Poland has in the meantime become a key transit hub for Ukrainian metals producers and received 64pc of the country's pig iron exports in January-May.
