Japanese airline company Japan Airlines (JAL) announced on 16 November that it plans to explore introduction of hydrogen-fuelled aircraft by cooperating with German and US-based start-ups.

JAL and hydrogen-fuelled aircraft developers German H2FLY, the US' Universal Hydrogen and ZeroAvia have signed initial agreements to examine safety, feasibility and maintainability of the aircraft, which will be equipped with fuel cells and electric motors, and designed to accommodate 40-60 flyers. The three start-ups target to achieve commercial use of the aircraft between the mid-2020s and 2030s. JAL did not disclose its target date to achieve commercial use of the aircraft.

The Japanese firm is still sorting out detailed schedules of the cooperation and types and sources of hydrogen. JAL could start with introducing hydrogen as a fuel in domestic flights.

The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It aims to procure around 400,000 kl/yr (6,800 b/d) of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), accounting for 10pc of JAL's total jet fuel procurement for both its domestic and international flights, by the April 2030-March 2031 fiscal year. JAL plans to receive SAF from US renewable fuels producers Raven SR, Aemetis and Gevo, as well as from biofuel producer Fulcrum BioEnergy.

Japanese trading house Sojitz had also invested in Universal Hydrogen to participate in development of hydrogen-fuelled aircraft in 2021, and has promoted hydrogen supply chain for decarbonisation of the aviation industry since March.
