Australia’s Woodside detects damage at gas pipeline

Australian independent Woodside has detected localised damage occurred to a pipeline under construction for its $12bn Scarborough gas project offshore Western Australia, during two separate incidents this month.

Pipeline contractor Italian engineering firm Saipem confirmed on 30 January that its Castorone vessel — which is completing the export trunkline coating and installation of a pipeline for the Scarborough joint venture — was involved in an unspecified incident, but added that the ship did not sustain major damage.

Woodside confirmed the 30 January incident was the second of two during January that impacted the contractor vessel working to install the Scarborough trunkline. The Perth-based firm said neither incident resulted in any injuries to personnel, and localised damage to the trunkline will be remediated.

"The safety of our teams, the environment and our assets remain the highest priority on all activities," a Woodside spokesperson said on 31 January. "We are continuing to support our contractor in their ongoing work on the trunkline installation." No further details were disclosed, including about the timeline of the repairs or about potential impact on the Scarborough project.

Woodside plans to export the first LNG cargoes from Scarborough in 2026 via its under-construction 5mn t/yr Pluto train 2, standing by its schedule despite environmentalists' litigation leading to a two-month delay to seismic testing at the offshore field last year.
