Enel workers unions poised for strike action

Several Italian unions representing integrated utility Enel employees are poised to call for strike action over the company's proposed cost-cutting measures.

Italian energy sector unions Filctem, Flaei and Uiltec have announced a preliminary "state of agitation" for all Enel workers over the company's plans to lower wages, reduce work flexibility and outsource activities.

"The inability to reverse a harmful and dangerous corporate direction will soon lead to union action," the unions said in an open letter on Tuesday.

The measures are part of Enel's pledge to reduce its debt pile by cutting costs by €1.2bn over the next three years.

Rising indebtedness was one of the reasons why the Italian government, which is the single biggest Enel shareholder, decided to oust the firm's previous chief executive Francesco Starace. New chief executive Flavio Cattaneo said the company would only spend cash generated by the business, without raising new debt.

But the unions suggested the debt-cutting measures risk reducing Enel's electricity production and distribution capabilities, and "seriously question" the possibility of maintaining the company's hydropower and geothermal concessions.

The unions have notified the Italian labour and businesses ministries of the start of agitation procedures, in accordance with national strike regulations.

Enel's net debt stood at around €61bn at the end of November, with the group aiming to lower it to €50bn-51bn by the end of this year.
