Japan's biomass power capacity under the feed-in-tariff (FiT) and feed-in-premium (FiP) schemes rose over October-December last year.

Japan added 60MW of biomass power capacity during the quarter, lifting total commercial capacity under the FiT and FiP schemes to 6,364MW as of the end of December 2023, according to trade and industry ministry data. The capacity addition during October-December 2023 was lower than the 230MW increase during the year-earlier period, and also below a 152MW increase during July-September 2023.

Installed capacity fed by general wood biomass and crop residue totalled 3,721MW at the end of December 2023, up by 24pc from the end of December 2022. Capacity firing with unused woody biomass rose by 11pc over the year to 541MW. Methane gas fermentation climbed by 13pc to 99MW, and capacity fed by general waste increased by 20pc to 554MW. Capacity using construction waste also rose by 11pc to 135MW.

Japan's operational biomass power capacity totalled 7,238MW as of the end of the December, including 874MW that was installed before the FiT was introduced in July 2012 but not transferred to receive support from the scheme. This capacity accounts for 90pc of Japan's new biomass power target of 8,000MW by April 2030-March 2031 fiscal year.

Total purchase costs for biomass power supplies under the FiT scheme reached ¥3.72 trillion ($24.1bn) for 143.2TMW from July 2012 to December 2023.

Japan aims to generate 36-38pc of the country's power output from renewable energy sources during April 2030-March 2031, which is double the target of 18pc for 2019-20. Biomass is forecast to account for 5pc of total output in 2030-31.
