Miner Freeport-McMoRan's copper production fell in the second quarter, outpaced by declining sales volumes after the company's Indonesian operations failed to export copper concentrate in June.
PT Freeport Indonesia was not authorized to ship out concentrate or anode slimes in June due to its export license expiring 31 May. The subsidiary received approval to resume exports on 2 July.
Freeport's copper production declined by 2.9pc to 1bn lbs in April-June from a year earlier, while sales volumes in the second quarter fell by 10pc to 931mn lbs. The volume was 5pc lower than a projected estimate of 975mn lbs for the quarter made in April.
Consolidated molybdenum production dropped by 4.8pc to 20mn lbs in the second quarter from a year earlier. Sales volumes rose by 4.8pc to 21mn lbs from the prior year.
Average copper prices rose by 15.4pc to $4.48/lb in the second quarter from a year earlier. Production cost per unit increased 13.6pc from the same time last year and the previous quarter as a result of the shipment delay in Indonesia.
Indonesia
Second-quarter output at Freeport's Grasberg project was 441mn lbs, up by 8.3pc from the same quarter a year earlier.
The PT-FI joint venture with the Indonesian government completed construction of and commissioned the new smelter in Gresik, Indonesia. The smelter is projected to be producing copper cathodes in a few months, ramping up fully by the end of the year.
The precious metal refinery is being constructed and expected to be at full capacity by the end of 2024. Downstream facilities will receive concentrate from the Grasberg minerals district.
Americas
Quarterly copper production for the seven Freeport mines in the southwest US dropped by 17pc to 298mn lbs from the previous-year period.
Output from the company's leaching initiative, which recovers copper from already-mined material, totaled
55mn lbs this quarter, a 62pc increase from the same time last year.
April-June production in Freeport's two South America copper operations totalled 298mn lbs, down by 3pc from the prior-year period.
Freeport's profits increased by 57pc to $616mn in the second quarter from a year earlier, while revenue grew by 14.4pc to $6.6bn.
