Turkey to become net steel exporter: TCUD

Turkish steel exports are expected to soon be higher than imports, Turkish steel producers association TCUD general manager Veysel Yayan said yesterday at an industry event. But market participants on the sidelines of the event viewed this as unlikely in the near future.

Flat steel imports' share of total consumption has declined to 42pc from 49pc last year and is forecasted to drop further next year, owing to import trade measures.

Imports in the first 10 months fell by 7.2pc to 13.7mn t. Despite the continuing decrease in imports, Turkish production levels are not sufficient enough to cover local consumption.

Capacity utilisation in Turkey is currently low, and mills are operating at around 60pc. "This is lower for flat steel producers, around 50pc," a source said. For the time being, 70pc of steel production in Turkey is for long steel, but this is expected to drop to 60-65pc, as demand for flat steel is on the rise, Yayan said.

One of the reasons for low capacity utilisation is low profit margins, amid fierce competition for Turkish mills with other suppliers in Turkey and abroad.

The high share of rebar exports weighs on profitability too. "Rebar is one of the least value-added steel products, and it's 20pc of Turkish steel exports. That's one of the reasons why profit margins are low," Kocaer Steel deputy chairman Mehmet Cakmur said.
