Q&A: Brazil's RNG eyes public transportation

  • : Natural gas
  • 25/01/27

Brazil's biomethane market is focusing on the transportation sector as a potential demand hub, because replacing diesel is more economically viable for the sustainable fuel than substituting natural gas. Argus spoke to Gabriel Kropsch, chief executive and founder of biomethane technology firm Sinergas and counselor at Brazilian biogas producers' association Abiogas, on what is on the horizon for this segment.

How can biomethane be used in bus fleets?

In Brazil, most public transport concessions are municipal and grant the companies a fixed income that encourages the lowest possible cost, leading to outdated vehicles. There are different models where city hall would separate the concession process between the purchase of buses and the concession of the operation. Another alternative is for the city itself to buy the vehicles, as Rio de Janeiro has done.

In the city of Sao Paulo a law requires public transportation achieve net zero within 10 years, but it was poorly written and postponed, but modified to add achievable targets. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, we are waiting on a tender for intermunicipal lines with a similar model.

How will the biomethane mandate impact its use in transportation?

Under the recently approved biomethane mandate, gas producers will be able to resell their mandatory biomethane purchases. The end-consumer will still be the industry or state distributors, which currently comprise the biomethane consumer market.

How fast are "sustainable corridor" projects moving forward?

There is no national-level project, but some states have taken an interest in the idea and started mapping and implementing it. Rio de Janeiro took the lead and issued a decree defining the Via Dutra roadway, which connects Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo, as a future sustainable corridor, and later expanded to Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais. Parana, Bahia and several other states also have biomethane roadway supply corridor projects.

State gas distributors are heavily involved, but these are individual actions by each state. It would be interesting to resume freight transport at the federal level because trucks pass through several states. Today there is a network of stations from Rio Grande do Sul to Ceara, which is not 100pc fueled by biomethane.
