Italy’s Snam to offer gas counterflow in Feb-Mar

Italian grid operator Snam will offer companies currently holding storage capacity the chance to inject gas over the next two months, when winter withdrawals typically slow substantially, and withdraw it in November 2025-March 2026.

Snam will offer the counterflow injection capacity through daily auctions on the Prisma platform and and communicate the results within 24 hours after each auction closes. Firms holding Italian capacity for the April 2024-March 2025 storage year may participate in the auctions.

No reserve price has been set for the upcoming counterflow capacity auction, but prevailing price spreads at Italy's PSV hub suggest no incentive to book it.

The PSV February and March contracts closed at €4.385/MWh and €4.215/MWh, respectively, above the winter 2025-26 market on Wednesday, suggesting no incentive for firms to inject in the next two months.

Snam offered counterflow services this month, as well as in February and November-December last year.

Over the past three years, average net withdrawals from Italian commercial stocks — excluding the country's strategic reserves — have continued until late April.

Italian commercial stocks totalled 7.3bn m³ on Wednesday morning, down from 7.9bn m³ a week earlier.
