The Japanese scrap dealer co-operative Kanto Tetsugen's monthly export tender price fell in February, owing to a stronger yen and lackluster overseas demand.

The tender for 15,000t of H2 scrap settled at ¥43,200/t fas on 12 February, marking a loss of ¥1,610/t from January. This set the fob price at an equivalent of ¥44,200/t, or $287.69/t. The dollar-equivalent price only fell by $1.62/t from the previous month because of the appreciation of the Japanese yen. The yen rose by 2.6pc against the dollar to to ¥153:$1 on 12 February from the previous tender on 10 January.

The cargo from the February tender is expected to be shipped to Bangladesh, with the cfr price estimated at around $350/t, similar to last month's level. Bangladesh buyers have demonstrated more consistent demand compared with other Asian scrap buyers.

Despite the month-on-month decline, the February Kanto tender was nearly ¥3,000/t higher than regional buyers' targeted bid levels. South Korean buyers were absent from the market because of their stagnant domestic steel market, while Vietnamese buyers were hesitant to accept the current offer level.

The Argus H2 fob Japan assessment was at ¥41,400/t on 11 February, and the January monthly average was ¥41,695/t fob Japan. The H2 collection price at Tokyo Steel's Utsunomiya plant stood at ¥40,000/t and remained unchanged after the tender.
