Australian mineral producer Lynas Rare Earths posted record high neodymium-praseodymium output in April-June, exceeding 2,000t of production within a quarter for the first time ever.

The firm's total rare earth oxide production in April-June was 3,212t, up by 47pc on the year and by 68pc on the quarter, according to its latest results. Its neodymium-praseodymium output reached 2,080t during the quarter, up sharply by around 38pc both on the year and on the quarter, with the company having progressively commissioned its assets. It will be focusing on stabilising production at higher run rates while keeping up with market demand fluctuations, it said on 24 July.

The producer's sales revenue rose by 38pc on the quarter and by almost 25pc on the year to A$170.2mn ($112.6mn). Its average selling price rose to A$60.20/kg over the quarter — the highest since July 2022 — coinciding with the start of China's imposition of its export control scheme on some medium and heavy rare earths in April.

China accelerated its approval of rare earth export permits following widespread criticism, and may have recently allocated the first batch of production quotas for the year.

Lynas is seeing a "significant increase" in demand from direct customers and new magnet maker projects, it said. But it is also preparing for continued market volatility in July-September, it added.

The firm has signed a non-binding agreement with South Korean permanent magnet manufacturer JS Link to develop a 3,000 t/yr rare earth permanent sintered magnet manufacturing facility near its existing Malaysian rare earth plant, whereby it will also supply its rare earth materials.Malaysia in 2023 floated a ban on rare earth raw material exports, although this did not take place.

Lynas produced its first separated dysprosium in Malaysia in May and its first separated terbium in June — making it the first producer of separated heavy rare earths outside China. The allocation of production capacity is still ongoing, it said.

Lynas in May also signed an agreement with the Malaysian state of Kelantan's investment agency Menteri Besar to secure new feedstock for its Malaysian plant.
