New Zealand oil, gas exploration to reopen in September

New Zealand's conservative coalition government will reopen blocks outside the onshore Taranaki basin to oil and gas explorers by September, after overturning a ban by the previous Labour administration.

The Crown Minerals Amendment bill is currently passing through parliament, resources minister Shane Jones said on 31 July. He blamed the 2018 exploration ban for exacerbating domestic gas supply shortages. Gas output has fallen to four decade lows in recent quarters, government data show.

Wellington has promised to invest NZ$200mn ($118mn) in taxpayers' money to cover up to 15pc of the cost of new projects to try and turn around the upstream sector. But Taranaki basin operator Beach Energy declared in May that it had lost confidence in the nation's investment environment because of the exploration ban. Labour, the main centre-left opposition, remains against new oil and gas production.

The country is considering LNG imports and plans to double geothermal use by 2040, as it grapples with energy supply concerns.

Low hydroelectricity inflows resulted in coal-fired generation growing 118pc on the year in 2024 to make up the shortfall, while wind and solar generation grew by 22pc and 62pc, respectively.
