Permits for operating the offshore Maari oil field in New Zealand's Taranaki basin have been extended by a decade, Australian independent Cue Energy said today.

Maari is New Zealand's largest producing oil field, and is operated by Austria's OMV under oil mining permit 38160. The field has produced 50mn bl since beginning production in 2009.

The permit now runs until December 2037, Cue said, enabling the Maari partners to assess opportunities for resource optimisation and field enhancement.

The field produced about 4,200 b/d in April-June but recent well workovers and optimisation programmes have lifted output to 5,600 b/d for August, which is the highest monthly rate in over five years, Cue said.

OMV last year cancelled plans to sell its oil and gas business in New Zealand after nearly two years on the market.

OMV owns 69pc of the project with Australia's Horizon Oil controlling 26pc and Cue 5pc of the field.

New Zealand is looking to boost upstream activity after overturning a 2018 ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration permits.
