Top South Korean battery maker SK On has launched a pilot plant for all-solid-state batteries, and plans to commercialise — likely referring to production at scale — the batteries by 2029, a year ahead of an original 2030 target.

The firm's pilot plant will primarily be used to develop sulphide-based all-solid-state batteries but with some lines dedicated to lithium-metal batteries, said the firm on 16 September. The plant will use the firm's own Warm Isostatic Press-free technology, it said, which is a pressing process that applies uniform pressure to electrodes at elevated temperatures to improve battery density and performance.

It is looking to commercialise its all-solid-state batteries with an energy density of 800Wh/L, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,000Wh/L.

The battery firm earlier this year went through a merger and absorbed SK Enmove, the lubricants and cooling arm under parent group SK Innovation, for further business integration.

SK Innovation on 17 September also signed an agreement with US engineering firm KBR to license SK's battery metal recycling technology — which it said can directly recover lithium hydroxide from used batteries. KBR will integrate SK's recycling technology with KBR's own lithium refining and conversion technology, said SK Innovation.

KBR in April partnered with European oil and gas producer Neptune Energy for battery-grade lithium carbonate production using gas field brine at Neptune's Altmark site in Germany. Neptune said it could produce up to 25,000 t/yr of lithium carbonate at the Altmark site, if it is scaled commercially. Neptune earlier this year commissioned its second lithium extraction pilot plant and it is testing various direct lithium extraction technologies by running pilot projects, which will run until January-March 2026, it said in June.

SK On's average international operating rates at its battery plants were 52.2pc in the first half of 2025, following better production performance in April-June.
