US to impose 25pc tariff on heavy trucks

The US will impose a 25pc tariff on imports of heavy trucks starting 1 October, US president Donald Trump said late Thursday, a move aimed at protecting domestic truck manufacturers.

The social media post from Trump provided no details on what specific types of trucks will be subject to the tariff but he mentioned manufacturers like Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner and Mack Trucks in the post.

The move may be tied to an investigation started earlier this year by the Secretary of Commerce into whether imports of heavy-duty trucks are a national security threat. The section 232 investigation defined the vehicles as "trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more," and medium-duty trucks, medium- and heavy-duty truck parts, and their derivatives.

Public comments into the investigation closed in mid-May, but it is not clear if the findings were presented to the White House, spurring the social media post.

US imports of heavy- and medium-duty trucks in 2024 totaled 245,764 units, with Mexico, Canada and China as the top suppliers, according to data compiled by the Department of Commerce. Domestic assembly of heavy and medium duty trucks totaled 3.96mn units in 2024, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis.

It is also not clear if the tariffs would apply to imports from Mexico or Canada, which are largely regulated through the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement.
