Japan car output edges up in August on overseas demand

Japan's car output edged up on the year in August partly supported by higher demand from overseas markets.

Japan produced 510,000 units of automobiles in August, up by 1pc on the year, according to data compiled by Argus based on reporting by eight major domestic car manufacturers.

A Japanese car maker, whose main export destinations are the US, Canada and Australia, raised output of cars targeted for sales in the overseas markets, Japan's trade and industry ministry (Meti) said on 30 September.

The country's largest car maker Toyota exported 41,342 units of passenger vehicles to the US in August, up by 12pc on the year, the company said. This is the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year growth, Toyota said.

Japan and the US reached a trade agreement in late July, under which the US imposes a 15pc tariff on car imports from Japan. This has been reduced from the previous rate of 27.5pc.

But the impact of this agreement on Japan's car output is yet to be assessed, a Meti official said. The new 15pc tariff came into effect in September after US president Donald Trump gave his final approval by signing an executive order.
