Vietnam's Duc Giang Chemical plans to build a 500,000 t/yr aluminium smelter — the country's second one — as part of a larger complex that will also house a 2mn t/yr alumina refinery.

The project is expected to take around five years and be completed by 2030, though a specific timeline for the start of production was not given.

Duc Giang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Lam Dong province on 12 October to build the complex. The alumina refinery will be in the Tuy Duc commune in Lam Dong province and will source raw materials — including bauxite —from Mine Cluster No. 4 (formerly Dak Nong), Duc Giang said.

The aluminium electrolysis plant will be located along the coastal area of the Lam Dong province and will use power from thermal and renewable energy sources.

Vietnam is developing its aluminium industry further following the launch of its first smelter project in Dak Nong, now part of Lam Dong province.

The Dak Nong aluminium smelter is Vietnam's first aluminium smelter, with phase I capacity of 150,000 t/yr. Operations for phase I are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026. The phase II is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027 with a designed capacity of 300,000 t/yr. The Dak Nong smelter is expected to reach its full design capacity of 450,000 t/yr by the first quarter of 2028.
