Grupo Mexico favors Zn, Mo; 3Q Cu output dips

Grupo Mexico's copper output dropped because the company favored the production of zinc and molybdenum as the conglomerate extracted lower-grade copper ore from its Mexican and Peruvian mines.

Grupo Mexico's copper output dropped by 5.5pc to 265,437 metric tonnes (t) in the third quarter from a year earlier. The conglomerate chose to prioritize silver and molybdenum extraction after its copper mines in Mexico and Peru yielded lower ore grades, it said.

The company increased its output of zinc and molybdenum by 46.3pc and 8.3pc, respectively, while also boosting sales of the two metals. This — in addition to an increase in metals prices — drove a 9.6pc rise in the mining division's revenue, which reached $10.3bn.

Third quarter production totaled 45,483t of zinc and 7,875t of molybdenum.

Total revenue for Grupo Mexico hit just over $13bn, a 5.7pc increase from the same period last year.
