India scraps BIS norms on some metals

India's Ministry of Mines rolled back a few Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for non-ferrous metals, including nickel, zinc, tin, lead, copper and aluminium, to ease raw material sourcing and stabilize supply chains.

The withdrawal of these Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification requirements, announced late on 13 November, will provide short-term relief to downstream industries such as stainless steel, specialty alloys and battery materials.

The withdrawn QCOs covered metals critical for sectors like automotive, electronics, and renewable energy.

The removal of BIS norms for nickel is unlikely to affect the market significantly. Most global suppliers already meet documentation standards. The continued ban on Chinese stainless steel coils is the real challenge and will keep pressure on domestic prices, a source said.

While controls on non-ferrous metals are being eased, stainless steel remains under strict control. The QCO for stainless steel flat-rolled products (IS 6911 and IS 15997) will stay intact, and imports of hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils from China will remain banned until at least June 2026. Authorities also plan tougher checks on shipments routed through transshipment hubs like Port Klang of Malaysia to prevent circumvention of trade restrictions.
