Chilean fertilizer producer SQM made less potassium nitrate (NOP) fertilizer in 2025 versus last year as it pivoted to other specialty products, its latest financial reporting shows.
SQM made 127,900t of NOP, a major water-soluble fertilizer, and sodium potassium nitrate in the third quarter. This is down by nearly 6pc on the 136,600t made in the same quarter of 2024.
Year-to-date output of NOP and sodium potassium nitrate reached 394,700t in the first nine months of the year, down by 4pc year on year.
The financial statement said that the company had made a shift in its product mix, with a greater emphasis on specialty blends and high-value plant nutrients. Production of specialty blends rose to 103,600t in the third quarter, up by 8pc year on year. Output for the first nine months has risen by 11pc to 226,800t, versus 204,900t a year earlier.
SQM enjoyed strong revenue growth in its Specialty Plant Nutrition business line overall. Revenues for the first nine months grew to $732.4mn, versus $717.3mn for the same period a year earlier. Revenues for the third quarter were up to $259.8mn versus $249.1mn a year earlier. Overall sales volumes and revenues grew slightly on firm demand, particularly in the Americas and Europe.
NOP is the largest segment of the global water-solubles market with SQM the largest single producer. Other key producers include Haifa in Israel, Kemapco in Jordan and several makers in China. Argus estimates global demand at around 2mn t/yr.
